About
Our Bamboo Bench Pavilion was a design + build project for a group of 13 Architecture students enrolled at the University of Colorado at Denver in the CAP program. The goal during their Studio V course was to collectively and collaboratively design a pavilion to be constructed with bamboo as the main building material. Our design process started off with two separate competitions amongst each individual student in order to choose our pavilion's materiality and design. There was a unanimous vote for bamboo as the primary material, as well as a design created by student Sinh Tran. From there, we worked together to refine our base design and effectively produce a full-scale pavilion that showcased the regenerative qualities and capabilities of our chosen material, bamboo. All of this is how we ended up with the pavilion you may be seated at right now!
The bamboo we used was ordered online and shipped to us from across the country, then later planted and maintained by the students. From start to finish, this entire project was completed over the course of around 9 weeks during the Spring 2023 semester. The structure was built/assembled on the UCD campus both directly on-site and inside the school's personal woodshop. It is located right outside of the CU Building in Denver across the street from Larimer Square and is intended to reside there for one year.
